Operating since 1992, the Winona Area Humane Society (WAHS) is a no-kill shelter that places hundreds of cats and dogs in loving forever homes every year. Our mission to help homeless animals is achieved mostly through fundraising, generous donations, and adoption/surrender fees; we do not receive any state or federal funding.
Our mission is to:
Reunite lost animals with their families
Find forever homes for animals without families
Provide humane care and treatment for animals needing protection
Relieve the suffering of animals
Prevent cruelty to animals
Increase humane education in the Winona area
Work against breed-specific discrimination
Utilize research-based standards from the field of shelter care
Spay/neuter each adopted animal to reduce animal overpopulation

The Winona Area Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We depend on donations to cover the cost of caring for the animals and operating the facility. WAHS is governed by a board of directors, employs a small number of staff, and relies on volunteers to help keep the shelter running and the animals safe.
