About Wilbur:
Meet Wilbur, the boy with the beaming smile! Wilbur has a whole fan club behind him, rooting for this special fellow to find an equally special family.
It’s been quite a journey for WIlbur. He came to WAHS through another humane society that needed some help, and he’s about to cross the 6 month mark here at our shelter. His days are filled with his favorites: LOTS of playtime, fetch, swimming (he’s an obsessed water-dog), sunbathing, car rides, sniffari adventures, and of course cuddles. Wilbur is a mega cuddle bug and so sweet/loving to those whom he’s comfortable with.
Once in a calm environment with minimal distractions, Wilbur LOVES to learn. He’s intelligent and is great with commands like sit, lay down, stay/wait, drop, and more. Other activities that keep Wilbur engaged include treat puzzles, filled Kongs, parallel walks (and playing) with some fellow shelter dogs, and investigating every toy there is. Although he adores squeaky toys, they do not last long in his presence - so durable chews are the way to go.
It takes Wilbur a good bit of time getting to know new people, and even longer to find those who understand him. Long shelter stays for dogs like Wilbur can take a toll on the stressors they already feel; this is why Wilbur has begun a behavioral training program to maintain stability, consistency, and work on reactivity. He has made great strides in his training and is looking for a dedicated owner to continue progress.
The ideal home for Wilbur is one that’s on the quiet side without a lot of people traffic in and out, and preferably has a fenced in yard (rather than tie out). Due to his high energy level, a family must be prepared to provide him with daily play outlets, enrichment activities, and exercise. This is how he stays engaged, enriched, and happy. Wilbur craves a confident owner that will help him navigate the world in a positive way.
Wilbur’s future home is more specific than most, but that doesn’t mean he’s any less deserving of a forever family. He has so much love to offer. Once he meets the right people Wilbur is sure to be a loyal, affectionate companion.
